Sunday crafts with the kids

The school of 300 children, most of them from the leprocy colonies, is an amazing way to take these families out of poverty. This school runs on people sponsoring a child. Sponsorships run $360 a year, a dollar a day. Camille and I are sponsoring a child each. The school has the highest scores in the district and many of the children go onto college. I did not get many photos of the crafts we did with the girls on Sunday that a volunteer Shanta brought with her. I was busy making alligators.

There were no alligators where we are but there are cobras and scorpions. Two kids got stung by scorpions while we were there. Since they have their own medical and anti-venom, they were fine. One said she got stung twice - once by the scorpion and once my the anti-venom needle.  We did not see a scorpion or a cobra, but at one of the colonies they showed us a photo of a cobra









they recently saw in the village.

School prayer time Sunday

Every day he Rising Star school has a 30 minute inspirational non denominational prayer time before dinner We went with them today. My sponsor child, 12 year old Pria took me by the hand and we walked there. They take off their shoes and gather in classes on the floor of the cafeteria and have an opening song- this one was in English - then a man gave an inspiration message  about 15 minutes in Tamil. We had individual prayers and another song in Tamil and then a closing group prayer led by an older student. The girl who prayed was the same girl who was baptized at the Mormon church earlier that day. After prayer time it is dinner and everyone washes their hands,and gets a metal bowl. Each class is in a circle and a large vat of rice and another bowl of curry are brought to each class. Today is the one day that they have non vegetarian curry. Last day at Rising Star Sept 7

Thursday  September 7 last day at Rising Star In the morning, we visited our last lepracy colony, Chettipunniyam.   A young woman, Abby or Ambica who usually accompanied us in the colonies was with us and this was her home so people were excited to see her.  We went to the community center (built by Rising Star) and played Jenga with some of the kids. I massaged and oiled the legs of the community leader. She had leg muscle pain that I massaged and she said it felt a lot better.  The day before our facilitator, Natalie, went back to college at CalPoly San Lois Obisbo  so we were down a volunteer. The dance master Susie came to the colony today and the kids at the colony were excited to see Susie. She taught them all in her dance classes so she knew most of the kids.  We also got out the nail polish and Camille painted those who wanted their nails done.  There was a boy and girl there that were home because their father had just passed away from a heart attack. Monday Old age leprosy colony

Monday  Leprosy colony, dance, farm, shoes, saree,  Today the leprosy colony that we visited Polombakkam home, a colony for the aged and they offer end of life care or for people with no families. It was a well cared for place with a paid director, Ilango who has been overseeing the project for 7 years. They employ a nurse, a cook, and three others. He had great pride in his "home" not a colony and instead of patients, they called the 24 residents "inmates" which in in Indian English a better word. In this southern Indian state, Tamil is the first language and English is the second language so many people speak English.   He had some outside funding to help build nice toilets and keep he place up. They had nice plants and no garbage strewn about and was very proud of the nice living conditions there.
