Day 5

Today we changed our routine. We packed up our bags in the morning and went to a touristy beach town called Mahabalepurem.  It was our tourist shopping, Temple visiting, and beach resort time. We woke up to crazy loud thunder and lightning with dumping rain and wondered if our beach time was ruined. But by the time we arrived at the beach the rain was gone and the temples, carved out of a single piece of mountain, were cooler and almost comfortable compared to the usual oppressive heat and humidity.    The temples were built in 800 A.D. Camille and Natalie climbed up on a huge rock for a lookout and stumbled across a family of monkeys. It was a National Geographic moment.  One place there was a giant boulder sitting on a hill.  School girls wanted to get their pictures taken with Camille and Natalie, the fair ones of the group.

After visiting the stone temples, we ventured to a street with a lots of little shops catering to tourists. This is an area of local tourism, not many foreigners here.  Natalie had her favorite shops. The first one was the custom-made sandle shop for $10-$15  made out of camel leather. We all picked our styles, and our leather, and then had our feet outlined for size. The next day we pick them up and they were awesome. Camille got two pairs of sandals.   We also bought cool lounge pants for Camille and Ryan.  Camille also got her self a leather small backpack,  ruby earrings, a new purse, and a cloth one shoulder backpack. I had to get more money!  Nothing for me  nothing for me yet.

After the shopping and sandal orders, we checked into our hotel. It was an older hotel that is luxurious for this part of the world and they had a beautiful beach with that roof shade structures with a guard at the beach 24 hours a day    There were some women who came up to us and wanted to sell us some beautiful cloths.  Because of the guard, they were not permitted to come and haggle with us, so they stood from afar and showed us all their pieces of fabric. It was funny. Camille  loved body surfing in the bay of Bengal. It faces Burma and the Philippines. This hotel also had a beautiful pool,  it was probably about 90° – you walk in and it is extremely comfortable. The first time we went there were about 50 Indian men all together and no women. I wondered if  Indian women ever went to the pool.  But later we did see some Indian women at the pool. The men must've all been traveling together. They have a very heightened sense of modesty.    In coming here we were asked to wear only one piece bathing suit's, make sure your needs are covered and to wear their Indian clothing. We swim around a bit and then went to the beach. Camille likes body surfing. I went in for a little bit and the water was warm, the perfect temperature.   That night we ate dinner together at the restaurant. I had some chicken dish that was fine. We order different desserts, who knows what they were.

I was exhausted by the end of that day. Traveling and swimming and walking all around. The weather has turned hot so it it was perfect for the beach.
